Some projects are too beautiful not to capture. Moreover, not everyone can attend our concerts and enjoy the live experience. That's why we regularly make recordings of our performances. In November 2023, we presented the concert program "Songs of Farewell," featuring three magnificent pieces from the English choral tradition. This recording concerns Herbert Howells' Requiem.
Howells composed the work in 1932 in memory of soldiers who had perished in the First World War. The "Salvator mundi" is set in the Phrygian mode, traditionally the musical metaphor for mourning. Hope breaks through on "et lux perpetua luceat eis" in the loudest climax during the fifth movement. Let yourself be carried away by this magnificent performance. The piece was recorded live at the Grote Kerk in Zwolle.

It is a live recording from April 2016 at the Grote- or Jacobijnerkerk in Leeuwarden. It was one of the first programs under the direction of Peter Dijkstra in his role as chief conductor of the Netherlands Chamber Choir. In the 2024-2025 season, we will present this magnificent piece once again.

It is a powerful and intense composition. In this performance from 2012 - on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the Netherlands Chamber Choir - the choir is conducted by former chief conductor Tõnu Kaljuste, who with the shaman drum, urges the choir to great heights.
Watch & Listen moreDuring the traditional kickoff of the new cultural season at the Museumplein in Amsterdam during the Uitmarkt 2022 - broadcast live on Dutch national television - the Netherlands Chamber Choir sang a fragment from one of Erik Satie's most popular piano works, Gymnopédies no.1, in a fresh choral arrangement by William Knight, a core member of the Netherlands Chamber Choir. This piece was part of the performance "Van Gogh in Me" featuring visuals by the Italian audiovisual collective fuse*.

To our Youtube ChannelThe Netherlands Chamber Choir kicked off the 2023-2024 season online with the five-part video series "The Personal Archive Sessions." The focus is on the personal stories of the singers of the Netherlands Chamber Choir. Together with their colleagues, they perform music of their own choice and share intimate interviews about their profession and their lives. With "The Personal Archive Sessions," we not only showcase beautiful music but also introduce the singers of our choir to the viewer in a different, personal way. The series was recorded on location in a cozy living room atmosphere, the ideal setting for a series of personal conversations and intimate performances.
Watch all the Sessions on YoutubeIn honor of the celebration of 900 years of city rights of our hometown Utrecht and the large-scale European choir event Leading Voices, we performed Luciano Berio’s "Cries of London" in the impressive Werkspoorkathedraal in Utrecht. In this remarkable work, you hear the cries of street vendors rising from the squares, streets, and alleys of London, echoing between the walls of the old houses of this metropolis. Berio, who drew inspiration for this work from the markets of London, allows the singers to use various techniques, from humming to singing through closed teeth.
Watch on YoutubeDuring the pandemic, the halls remained empty, including the Concertgebouw. To let the music still resound, the Concertgebouw Sessions were recorded. This was one of those magical 'sessions,' in an empty Great Hall. The Netherlands Chamber Choir sings, under the direction of Krista Audere, the famous "O Magnum Mysterium" from Poulenc's "Quatre motets pour le temps de Noël." Four Christmas motets, of which this part was dedicated by the composer to Felix de Nobel and 'his magnificent Netherlands Chamber Choir.'
What is the hexachord ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la? Why is a note missing in this Medieval scale and where do these abbreviations come from? And how should you listen to Early Music? In "DoReMiFaSol," the Netherlands Chamber Choir delves into the world of scales from the Middle Ages. Conductor and early music specialist Paul Van Nevel provides explanations about the unique hexachord 'ut-re-mi-fa-sol-la', the basis for the modern Western scale as we know it today. In this series of online lectures, Van Nevel takes the viewer through musical works that consist solely of notes from the hexachord, and presenter Calmer Roos engages in conversation with him about the importance and development of these six notes.
