Steel Stolen
The title of this remarkable program refers to the material on which humans built the industrial revolution. The steel made from raw materials we extracted from the earth. Stolen perhaps. Mined to use for our purposes. But do we know its real powers? Are we aware of its unforeseen side effects? And what if those forces turn against us?
"Understand the power of what you mine before you use it."
That seems to be the message of the intoxicating piece Curse upon Iron by Veljo Tormis.
Cellist Maya Fridman leads the Nederlands Kamerkoor and Slagwerk Den Haag in a concert that questions our relationship as humans with nature. As humans, we place ourselves outside nature. But aren't we ourselves actually part of it? Isn't our 'culture' just 'nature'?
Alongside Curse upon Iron, Sonnengesang by Sofia Goebaidoelina, for choir, cello and percussion, and improvisations by singers from NKK NXT, the talent development programme of the Nederlands Kamerkoor, will also be performed. Swiss filmmaker Laurence Bonvin shot footage of the Swiss Aletsch glacier for this production.
This program is made possible by het Cultuurfonds (Aafje Heynis Fonds), Fonds 21, VSBfonds and GleveriD.

De Tegentijdse Tocht - a sound walk

The Tegentijdse Tocht is a guided sound walk of about 3 km through the surroundings of the Werkspoorkathedraal. You will walk together in a small group and listen via your phone with headphones/ears to a musical-poetic story that starts with the Big Bang and ends in the year 2121. Along the way, you discover how much we are inheritors of an immensely long history, and how our actions affect what lies ahead. In imagination, participants meet a child from the year 2121. To her we make a promise.
De Tegentijdse Tocht is an artistic project in which you experience the story of deep time and can feel how much we have a responsibility for future generations.
The script of De Tegentijdse Tocht was written by Merlijn Twaalfhoven and Jasper Visser. The script is voiced by Merlijn Twaalfhoven, Laura Mentink and Ami Kane with music by Merlijn Twaalfhoven.
